Sudden Cardiac Arrest is a leading cause of death in the U.S., claiming more than 325,000 lives each year. Early and rapid intervention is key to saving lives, which includes CPR and defibrillation. Stratton Mountain Urgent Care, Stratton Mountain Rescue, and Stratton Corporation have partnered together to create a Heart Safe Community at Stratton Resort. This resort-wide effort aims to educate first responders, ski patrol, resort and village employees, and community citizens on the dangers of Sudden Cardiac Arrest, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to save lives.

Since announcing the initiative, the resort has installed 12 more AED units to the 5 already existing at the resort. Stratton Mountain Rescue staff has trained or retrained more than 100 Stratton employees since the launch of the Heart Safe initiative. They offer two trainings a week, which are open to anyone.

A key feature of the AEDs is that they are accessible for public use, easy to use, and provide step-by-step instructions that can be followed even if a person has not been previously trained. “The new AEDs have a unique CPR feedback tool that is able to monitor CPR quality and provide real-time feedback for depth and rate of chest compressions. Audio and visual prompts help you to rescue with confidence and clarity that we feel is unmatched by any other AED,” says Johnna Gould, AEMT, chief of Stratton Mountain Rescue.

Currently AEDs are placed in public access areas throughout the Stratton Resort, including Stratton Homeowners Associations, Stratton Village, Ski Patrol and First Aid, Stratton Lodges, the Golf Course and Stratton Club, and other strategic locations.
