Manchester’s beloved independent, alternative radio station, 102.7 WEQX, has stood as a beacon of community togetherness and musical innovation from the moment its inaugural broadcast hit the airwaves in 1984. This year, as WEQX celebrates its 40th anniversary, they are doubling down on living by their founding ethos and philosophy: “The Real Alternative.”

Under the leadership of its founder, Brooks Brown, EQX charted a course as an iconoclastic, visionary radio station from its earliest years, quickly blossoming as a strong pillar of the alternative music scene. Over the past four decades, WEQX has played a pivotal role in breaking many independent artists, including Phantogram, Matisyahu, Spin Doctors, Robert DeLong, and many others. WEQX’s ability to identify and amplify emerging talent has solidified its reputation as a powerful and influential trendsetter and tastemaker. The station has cultivated a devoted following, which extends far beyond its impressive multi-state signal reach in Vermont, New York, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts.

Today, Brooks Brown’s founding principles continue to guide WEQX. “We like to think that his same independent spirit is alive and well at EQX today,” says WEQX Operations Manager, Jeff Morad. “Brooks might have passed away in 2013, but his vision lives on in every song we play.”

In the weeks following the official 40th anniversary of EQX on November 14, 2024, several EQX DJs sat down with Stratton Magazine to share their thoughts on the celebrated station’s past, present, and exciting future. Their passion for great music and listener connection shines through every broadcast, proving that great music, authenticity, and a commitment to community togetherness never goes out of style.

JEFF MORAD
OPERATIONS MANAGER

Born and raised on music, WEQX DJ and Operations Manager, Jeff Morad’s life has revolved around turntables and jam bands. In addition to hosting and curating the musical selections on WEQX several mornings a week, Morad also hosts “Jam ‘n Toast,” a longstanding favorite of EQX listeners that celebrates the jam band scene. Morad’s legendary voice and enthusiasm carries infectious energy, and his connection to the music is palpable in every on-air conversation and monologue.

What does EQX’s 40th anniversary mean to you? To me, it’s about  carrying on Brooks Brown’s vision. I keep his glasses on my desk to remind me of our responsibility: staying independent, true to our standards, and deeply connected to the music and the community. It’s humbling to be part of something with such a legacy.

How do you approach community collaborations? Whether it’s events or annual festivals like PearlPalooza, or a giveaways with local businesses, it’s all about building real relationships. We work with people and businesses that share our passion for creativity and community engagement. That’s what makes it work.

How do you see WEQX evolving in the future? I think the key is to stay true to our roots while adapting to the changing landscape. Technology has opened new doors, but it’s the human connection that keeps us relevant. We’re not just curating playlists; we’re fostering relationships with our listeners and the artists we champion.

JOY PROFT
ON-AIR PERSONALITY

WEQX DJ, Joy Proft’s voice has become synonymous with EQX’s mid-day sound, bringing energy and jovial fun to the airwaves that more than lives up to her first name. Hosting shows like “Retro Lunch” throughout the week and “Sunday Brunch Live,” Joy blends nostalgia with a contemporary edge—and her genuine love for EQX’s listeners is evident in her approach to her programming and on-air presence.

Why do you think WEQX resonates so deeply with its audience? It’s the humanity of it all. People feel the authenticity of real people and real music, and that’s rare in today’s media landscape. WEQX is a place where voices matter, and that’s something listeners pick up on.

What’s your favorite part of being on WEQX? The listeners. Hearing their stories, their love for the station, and how it’s a part of their lives makes every day special. It’s like having a big extended family that’s connected through music.

How does WEQX balance nostalgia and musical innovation? Our shows like ‘Retro Lunch’ keep the past alive while our regular programming pushes forward. It’s a delicate balance, but it’s what makes WEQX unique—we honor where we’ve been while always looking ahead.

JASON KELLER
PRODUCTION MANAGER

WEQX’s Production Manager, Jason Keller’s deep respect for WEQX’s legacy is evident in his musical choices, as well as his production decisions in regards to recurrent shows and collaborative advertisements for local businesses. Hosting the “Sunday Rewind” and the daily “Top 5 at 5,” Keller’s thoughtful approach to radio programming ensures that every track played is both meaningful and memorable.

How do you choose music for the station? It’s a collaborative effort. At our listening sessions where we decide what songs to play, we spend a long time talking things over. We try to balance instinct, listener input, and metrics, but at the core, it’s about the music that feels right. We ask ourselves, ‘Does this fit the vibe of WEQX?’ We want to create a unique experience.

How do you see WEQX evolving over the next 40 years? The mission remains the same: great music, with a little bit of familiar and a little bit of surprise. We challenge each other to keep things fresh and stay curious and adventurous.

What role do listeners play in your programming? They’re integral. Our ‘Top 5 at 5’ is a direct reflection of listener requests. We want to be a station that feels accessible and responsive. It’s a dialogue, not a monologue.

LUKE GELHEISER
MUSIC DIRECTOR

As WEQX’s Music Director, Luke Gelheiser scours the depths of the internet and alternative music communities for hidden gems. His show, “Going Underground,” has become a respected platform for musical innovation and discovery. Luke’s passion for finding and sharing new music is the driving force behind the station’s forward-thinking sound.

How do you find new music? I’m always looking—from streaming platforms to artist endorsements to Discord communities. You never know where the next great track will come from. It’s about keeping an open mind and a wide net.

How has the internet changed radio? It’s symbiotic. The internet and radio feed off each other, but we maintain a human element that algorithms can’t replicate. Radio brings curation and personality that streaming can’t match.

What defines the WEQX sound? It’s eclectic but cohesive. We have a vibe that’s hard to pin down, but unmistakable when you hear it.”
